How Are Qantas Points Calculated? (2025 Guide)
The Qantas Points Earning Formula
Qantas Frequent Flyer Points are calculated using a simple formula: flight distance (km) × earn rate (pts/km). The earn rate depends on your fare class, also called an "earn category." For return flights, multiply the one-way result by 2.
Qantas Points = Distance (km) × Earn Rate (pts/km)
For return: × 2. With tier bonus: × multiplier
Earn Rates by Fare Class (2025)
| Earn Category | Points / km | Status Credits / km |
|---|---|---|
| Red e-Deal | 3 | 0.025 |
| Saver | 4 | 0.03 |
| Flex | 6 | 0.05 |
| Business Saver | 8 | 0.06 |
| Business | 10 | 0.08 |
| First | 15 | 0.12 |
How Distance Is Calculated
Qantas uses the scheduled flight distance between airports, which closely approximates the great-circle distance — the shortest path between two points on Earth. Our calculator uses the haversine formula to compute this accurately using airport coordinates. Results may differ slightly from Qantas's published distances due to routing variations.
Tier Bonuses (Bronze to Platinum One)
Higher Qantas Frequent Flyer tiers earn bonus points on eligible Qantas flights:
| Tier | Bonus | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 0% | 1.0× |
| Silver | +25% | 1.25× |
| Gold | +50% | 1.5× |
| Platinum | +75% | 1.75× |
| Platinum One | +100% | 2.0× |
Earning on Partner Airlines
Qantas Frequent Flyer members earn points on partner airline flights including Emirates, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, and all oneworld alliance members. Earn rates vary by partner and cabin class — use our partner airlines calculator for exact rates.
Earning on Jetstar
Jetstar flights earn Qantas Points on Starter Plus, Starter Max, and Business Max bundles — but not on the base Starter fare. Crucially, Status Credits are never earned on Jetstar flights. See our Jetstar points calculator.
Status Credits vs Qantas Points — What's the Difference?
Qantas Points are your reward currency — redeemable for flights, hotel stays, car hire, and merchandise. They never expire as long as you earn or redeem at least once every 18 months.
Status Credits are your tier currency — they determine whether you hold Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Platinum One status. They reset to zero each anniversary year and cannot be redeemed for anything.
